IEP test, 504 test, educational assessment, ADHD evaluation- these are all terms that refer to a Psychoeducational Evaluation. Psychoeducational Evaluations are administered by a School Psychologist (in the school setting) or by a Licensed Educational Psychologist to obtain information about a student's learning strengths and weaknesses, behavior, and/or mental health. In the public school setting, these are typically conducted in order to determine if a child or teen has a disability that requires special education support, or to determine if a student is eligible for gifted and talented programs (GATE).
Parents and students may seek assessments outside of the school district for a variety of reasons. These include
Psychologists use different procedures depending on the reason for the assessment. These include standardized tests to measure ability, (such as IQ tests), and achievement to identify learning disabilities. Rating scales are used to determine if thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are present, and to the degree these are impacting learning. Typically students, parents, and teachers complete rating scales. Psychologists can gather information about students’ learning and behavior by directly observing the students during assessment sessions and in natural settings, such as the classroom, if desired. Direct interviews with the student enables them to provide information about their goals, concerns, and school experience. Once testing is complete, a comprehensive report is written to explain results. Recommendations are made for the school setting as well as home and other services that may benefit the student.
